Propello Pulse Methodology

Understanding the framework, assessment design, and how your results are generated.

Assessment Framework

Propello Pulse is built on a comprehensive procurement competency framework that maps nine core domains essential to modern procurement practice. Each domain is subdivided into three proficiency levels, creating a layered approach to skills assessment.

9 Core Domains
Analysis, Specification Writing, Strategic Sourcing, Cost Management, Risk Management, Legal, Digital & Technology, Negotiation, and Contract & Relationship Management.
3 Proficiency Levels
Foundation (core concepts), Intermediate (applied scenarios), and Advanced (strategic thinking). Each level builds on previous mastery.
Scenario-Based Questions
Questions present realistic procurement situations requiring practical judgment, not just theoretical knowledge.
Why This Structure?
The three-level progression reflects how procurement expertise develops: foundational understanding → ability to apply concepts to real situations → strategic decision-making at organisational level. This mirrors actual career progression and identifies precisely where development effort is most needed.

Proficiency Levels Explained

Each proficiency level targets a distinct type of competency and requires different cognitive depth:

Level Definition Example Points per Correct Answer
Foundation Core concepts and vocabulary. Understanding what procurement mechanisms exist and when to use them. "What is the purpose of a Request for Information (RFI)?" 1 point
Intermediate Applied scenarios. Taking foundational knowledge and applying it to real procurement challenges. "Your spend analytics show tail spend across 200 suppliers — what analytical approach would you use?" 2 points
Advanced Strategic decisions. Weighing trade-offs, managing competing priorities, and making portfolio-level judgments. "You're evaluating a strategic supplier relationship that has deteriorated — what interventions would you consider and in what sequence?" 3 points

The point weighting reflects increasing complexity: Foundation questions are worth fewer points because they test foundational knowledge, while Advanced questions are worth more because they require deeper synthesis and judgment.

How Scoring Works

Your Propello Pulse score is calculated using a weighted methodology that reflects the depth of expertise tested at each level.

Overall Score Calculation
Your overall score is the total points earned across all questions, divided by the total points possible. For example: if you score 147 points across all questions and the total possible is 216, your overall score is 68% (147÷216).

Proficiency Levels (Overall Score)

Overall Score Range Proficiency Level Interpretation
0–49% Developing Building foundations. Focus on core concepts in your lowest-scoring domains.
50–66% Foundation Solid grounding. Ready to develop applied skills in realistic scenarios.
67–83% Intermediate Strong applied competency. Focus on strategic thinking in weaker domains.
84–100% Advanced Operating at strategic level. Focus on mentoring and organisational capability.

Development Recommendations

Your assessment results include three prioritised development recommendations. These aren't generic — they're directly linked to your performance and tailored to your proficiency level.

How Recommendations Are Created

Recommendation Structure
Each development recommendation includes three specific actions you can take immediately. These aren't aspirational — they're designed to be actionable within 2–4 weeks. For example: "Audit your supplier risk register — identify 10 key risks, score them on likelihood and impact, and map each to a specific mitigation action." Recommendations focus on structured practice, not passive learning.

Capability Profile (Spider Chart)

Your results include a spider chart visualising your proficiency across all nine domains. This gives you an instant picture of where your strengths lie and where development effort should be concentrated.

Strength Identification
Domains where you scored 70%+ show established capability. These are areas where you can confidently lead and mentor others.
Gap Visibility
Domains below 60% are priority development areas. Focus here first for maximum capability gain.
Development Targets
Domains in the 60–70% range are "in progress" — they're ready for applied skill development and scenario practice.

The spider chart makes it easy to share results with your manager or mentor: it's instantly clear which domains need investment and which represent competitive advantage.

Assessment Rigor

Propello Pulse uses several mechanisms to ensure assessment reliability and validity:

Using Your Results

Your Propello Pulse results are designed for actionable use within your organisation:

Individual Development

Team Assessment
Run Propello Pulse across your team to identify collective capability gaps and opportunities for peer learning and mentoring.
Capability Planning
Use results to inform hiring, training, and development strategy. Identify which domains are weak across the organisation and which represent competitive advantage.

All results are confidential. Your PDF report is yours to share with your manager, learning provider, or mentor — we don't retain or access your data.
